The KOOPMANS 48 history is very well documented. The idea to build STORMVOGEL was born by a Dutch couple who likes to start with sailing after their retirement. So they did some research for the right kind of boat and for a professional yard who can build it.
The aim was clear: Comfortable ocean going sailing yacht. Capabilities to sail long distances (even in cold/rough conditions). Handled by a small crew of two and some space for representation.
So they decided in the early 1990’s to build a KOOPMANS yacht. Made from aluminium with deckhouse and centre board. In these days WILHELMINA yard was a successful yacht builder. Beside there commercial ship building department. The aluminium kasko was welded at KOOPMANS Kasko in Sneek. It is the same family name, but they are not related to KOOPMANS yacht design.
To build a one-off yacht takes some time – basically like a house. But in reality a yacht is more complex so it needs more time to build. The work started in 1995. 1997 the maiden journey was done.
After some small legs in home waters and across to England, the builder couple sailed STORMVOGEL down to Turkey and spend some time there. For unknown reasons (maybe age?) they decided to quit sailing in the early 2000’s. A professional crew sailed the boat back to THE NETHERLANDS. After some optical re-fit work STORMVOGEL was offered to the market, the boat was located in the Ijsselmeer.
In 2005 a Dutch aircraft pilot bought the boat. He plans to go sailing after his retirement in a few years. In his period as owner he started an improvement project on STORMVOGEL. The yacht was built without a bow thruster and it is not easy to handle a long keel yacht in the small environments of Dutch marinas. He asked the yard HUTTING to implement a bow thruster and do some technical re-fit´s as the boat was long time not used. For example, the PERKINS / EMI generator was not working any more.
The pilot sailed the boot only on the weekend in Dutch waters. As things changes in life, he changed his mind in what to do after retirement. So STORMVOGEL went again to the market in 2009. Everything was prepared for a longer period of not using it. The boat was stored in a shed in Makkum.
In January 2012 we found STORMVOGEL when we visited HUTTING to look for ocean going aluminium yachts. As the yacht fulfilled a lot of our expectation we bought the boat in February 2012. We started a major re-fit project to adjust the boat in detail to our requests and exceptions. So we knew before that we invest more money in the re-fit than we paid for the boat. We changed and improved a lot in 2012, here only a few highlights:
- Complete replacement of all electronics by FURUNO equipment
- New GEBO windows in the deckhouse (double-glass, sun protected)
- New ceiling inside the cabin as we like the HUTTING design very much
- Sea-berth at the port side in the cabin instead of two seats
- Complete new standing rigg (Dyform shrouds, furlers etc.)
- Complete new set of sails (Hydra Net Radial 433)
- INMARSAT Satellite communication
On our way around the world we replaced the main engine. We added a water maker and a short wave radio, installed solar panels and towing generator. Because of this permanent improvements and maintenance we can assure a potential buyer, that STORMVOGEL is really in a very good technical condition.
The makers – back home
After our arrival back home in summer 2016 we started another major re-fit project on STORMVOGEL. This time not a technical focus (as technically everything is fine). But with a strong optical approach. After all these years and especially the last four years of intensive, daily usage STORMVOGEL we wanted to make her nice again. So we put the boat at a professional yard close where we live here in Germany and started the project “beauty farm”.
The project aim was to make STORMVOGEL very close to new again. This is possible as all materials are solid and strong to work on. Hull, deck, rigg and cabin gets a new coating (paint-job, of course including a solid professional surface preparation!). The teak on deck and in the cockpit gots a complete overhaul. STORMVOGEL was back into the water in May 2017.
The budget for this refit was close to the price of a new fiberglass production yacht. But the result was much, very much more solid and nice! 😉
STORMVOGEL will have an over-all lifetime of minimum 60 years because of design, material and maintenance level. There will be no big issue in the next 8 to 10 years – as it is a boat, there will be some small issues, of course.
The makers – why to sell?
We decided to offer our most loved yacht to the market because we will not go on a big sailing journey again. Of course we will sail STORMVOGEL as long as possible in the Baltics or North Sea. STORMVOGEL is made for long legs, for the big oceans and spectacular sailing adventures. So its better for the boat, to find a new owner who likes to do his/her life-dream-trip.
So if you think, this could be the right boat for you, please study this web site and get in contact with us. Even if you do not like to buy now, but maybe later – get in contact with us and spend a day on board with us to learn everything about this beautiful sailing yacht.
